Bollywood Film Jal on Oscar Longlist for Best Picture, Original Score

Girish Malik's National Award winning film Jal has found a place in the Oscar longlist of 2014 in two categories - Best Picture and Best Original Score.

The film, which has the backdrop of water scarcity and tells the story of Bakka, a person gifted with a special ability to find water in the desert, features in the reminder list of productions eligible for the 87th Academy Awards.

This apart, the film's screenplay has also been invited to the Oscar Library for their permanent core collection.

"Jal is in the race for the final five nominees in two most prestigious categories - Best Picture and Best Original Score alongside path-breaking films likeInterstellar, Exodus, 300 Rise of Empire and other Hollywood biggies," Puneet Singh, director of One World Films Pvt Ltd, the film's production banner, told IANS.

The film features Purab Kohli, Kirti Kulhari and Tannishtha Chatterjee in prominent roles.

Girish Malik, who stepped behind the camera for the first time with the film, says that it is wonderful to get noticed on such a huge platform. "Jal has been shortlisted as one of the contenders for the list of final five nominees in the mainstream Best Picture category and not the Best Foreign Language film category, which means it will be competing with the Hollywood biggies to find a space for itself and hopefully get noticed on this stupendous platform.

"It was a tremendous struggle to make this film and I am happy and thankful that it's being noticed on the biggest platform for cinema," he said.

The music and background score for the film has been composed by Sonu Nigam and Bickram Ghosh.

The other Indian film which features in the longlist for the Best Original score is Kochadaiiyaan, which has compositions by AR Rahman.

The double Oscar winner is also in the list of 114 music scores for two more of his Hollywood projects - Million Dollar Arm and The Hundred-Foot Journey.

The final nomination list will be announced on January 15, 2015, while the presentation ceremony will be held on February 22, 2015 at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood.

India’s music maestro A.R. Rahman may end up getting his third Oscar nomination in the best original score category after making it to the list of 114 probables, while Hindi film Jal also features in the long list of best picture Oscar hopefuls.
Rahman, who has previously been nominated for 127 Hours and Slumdog Millionaire, for which he won two Oscars, has made it to the list for three of his films including Hollywood movies The Hundred-Foot Journey and Million Dollar Arm and Rajinikanth-starrer Tamil film Kochadaiiyaan.
As congratulations poured in from fans on twitter, Rahman tweeted in Tamil “All praise is for God.” Girish Malik’s directorial debut Jal, a film based on water scarcity issue, has also found a place among the 100 films shortlisted for nomination in the best picture category as well as in the best original score list for Sonu Nigam and Bickram Ghosh’s rustic compositions.
Jal features in the best picture list as an independent submission, while India will officially be represented in the best foreign feature category by Liar's Dice. “We directly submitted our film. I believed in our content and that’s why we sent our movie. Two days ago we got the news that our screenplay was acquired by the Oscar library. Now our film is among the 100 films hoping for an Oscar nomination,” Jal producer Puneet Singh said.

Delhi High Court stops Xiaomi from importing & selling handsets in India after Ericsson complaint

The Delhi High Court in an interim order has restrained Xiaomi as well as online e-commerce site Flipkart from selling in India handsets of the Chinese mobile maker that run on the technology patented by Ericsson
The court has also restrained Xiaomi or its agents from making, assembling, importing or offering for sale its devices which are infringing the mobile phone technology patented by Ericsson.
Justice G P Mittal directed the customs authorities to prevent import of Xiaomi phones that are infringing the patents of Ericsson and if any consignment is imported, the same be informed to Ericsson and its objections be decided as per the Intellectual Property Rules.
"I am satisfied that plaintiff (Ericsson) has made out a prima facie case for grant of ad interim injunction in its favour. The balance of convenience also lies in favour of plaintiff and in the absence of an injunction order, plaintiff will suffer irreparable loss and injury," the court said.
It also issued summons and notice to Xiaomi and Flipkart and directed them to file an affidavit disclosing the number of devices - that are AMR, EDGE and 3G compliant - sold by them in India till date.
They have to also indicate in the affidavit the revenue earned by selling these devices till date.

The court has also appointed three local commissioners to visit the premises of Xiaomi and Flipkart where the devices are stored in order to inspect and collect documents as well as seal the infringing mobiles.

The total fees of the local commissioners, amounting to Rs 3.5 lakh shall be borne by Ericsson apart from travel and stay expenses, it said.

The local commissioners have to submit their report within four weeks, it also said.

The order was passed on the plea of Ericsson that Xiaomi has been violating its eight patents pertaining to AMR, EDGE and 3G technologies in the field of telecommunication.

Ericsson has said that it had invited Xiaomi to use its patented technology by obtaining a licence, but instead of doing so, the Chinese manufacturer launched its devices in India in July 2014.
